A new year is a time for resolutions, clean slates and getting things in order. In the past, I have always vowed that this is going to be the year that I start working on my Spanish again. And although, like with most people, the intentions are 
there, they never really stick. A couple of years ago I vowed that I wouldn’t make new year’s resolutions any more but I would have things that I would want to work on. This year, among other things, I decided that with my iPhone always at my side, I would start taking advantage of some of the educational apps that are out there – 101 Spanglish is my first attempt.
A very simple and easy to use app, Spanglish is like taking a beginning Spanish class similar to when you were in high school. It has the basic vocabulary – colors, numbers, things, animals, etc. The word is listed above nine different pictures and you must select the corresponding picture. I have found that even though I rarely practice my Espanol, I still remember a lot of the words; however, I have in no way reached 100 percent any of the times that I have played.
What I liked about this app is that although this is the only practice – matching the Spanish word with a corresponding pictures, it is a continuous cycle and you can work at your own pace. Because there are no timers, levels or things to accomplish, I found it very soothing and non-threatening. The “game” is played at your own place and either the sound or color will alert you if your answer was correct. And unlike some of the other games out there, this will fill you in on any of the incorrect answers that you may choose.
Although there are a few things that I think could make this app better: pronouncing the word so you don’t only have to read it but can hear how it is supposed to sound; 
larger vocabulary and maybe better graphics, I think this is the perfect app to get you started on learning some of the basics. It is easy to use and you can use at your own pace – which I think is a real benefit.
Learning a new language is tough and getting answers wrong all of the time isn’t very encouraging. 101 Spanglish offers words that can easily be remembered and sometimes sound similar in English so your guess factor is narrowed down. For 99 cents, you really can’t go wrong. Download this app today and start from where you left off back in the ninth grade – 101 Spanish.

The Spanglish app teaches Spanish words using pictures. You are shown a Spanish word and 6 to 9 thumbnail sized pictures. You need to pick the picture that corresponds to the Spanish word. If you choose the correct picture the app will turn green and shows the correct English word. If you choose an incorrect picture the app will turn red and still show the correct English word. Special emphasis has been taken to boost one’s spirits with complimentary remarks such as “Great Job”, “Congratulations”, “Excellent”, “Great answer”. This app will keep children occupied at restaurants, on long trips while also teaching them basic Spanish words.
